Why introduce a new Garden Waste collection?

The European Union has passed strict legislation called the Landfill Directive that sets limits to the amount of biodegradable material that can be sent to landfill throughout the EU. If the limit is exceeded fines of £150 per tonne will be applicable, this is on top of the landfill tax, which is currently £15 a tonne and the actual cost of landfill.

When garden waste is sent to landfill it has serious environmental consequences, causing pollution to the atmosphere and the local environment.

What causes this pollution?

· When garden waste and other organic materials are buried in landfill they decompose anaerobically (without oxygen) and produce methane, an extremely potent and highly polluting green house effect gas.

· Methane is more powerful than carbon dioxide.

· This gas plays a significant role in increasing ‘Global Warming’

· The decomposition process also creates strong organic acids, which react with buried scrap metal and produce liquids, called ‘leachates’ which pollute the water table and rivers, which has detrimental effects on wildlife.

Why is composting garden waste better?

· When organic materials are composted, which is an aerobic process (with oxygen), the by-products are carbon dioxide and water. This is far less harmful to the environment and has the added benefits of:

· Producing a valuable resource

· Saving landfill space

· Saving the cost of landfill.

The climate is changing, have you noticed the growing season is longer? Year round mowing and gardening may soon become the norm.

Compost It!

NEW Garden Waste Collection Service

Sedgemoor has now introduced a garden waste collection service. We will collect your garden waste once a fortnight on the same day as your recycling collection. Garden waste will not be collected with your normal weekly refuse collection. By collecting this waste separately we can compost your garden waste rather than let it ‘waste’ in a local landfill site. Over 6000 residents are already using this service by ordering either:

A Green Wheeled Bin for £15.00 per year

(only 60p per collection)

Or

Paper Sacks at 50 pence per sack (minimum order 10 sacks)

We will collect:

b Flowers, plants and weeds b Grass cuttings

b Leaves and Bark b Hedge clippings

b Branches b Straw and Sawdust

(less than 4" diameter only) (if bedding, only vegetarian animals please)

Those residents who subscribe to the Green Waste collection will be entitled to purchase Priorswood Compost and have it delivered to their door.
