BRENT
KNOLL GUIDES Brent
Knoll guides have had a very active time since the last AGM.
During
the Winter term of 2006 we worked on the Make It Multicultural challenges, we
had a trip to Holiday on Ice ‘Diamonds’ in Exeter and then went ice skating
ourselves in Bristol. We went on a
guide residential weekend. The
weekend had a beauty and chill out theme to it and the guides did yoga,
reflexology and had their hair styled by the girls from N’hance in BOS and on
the Sunday everyone had a makeover. They
all brought an outfit and we had ‘before and after’ photos taken. During
the summer term we did Go For It Football.
We played football, did football quizzes, each guide designed a football
strip and fabric painted it onto a shirt. Who
said football is not for girls!! We
went raft building – always a popular night for the girls, plenty of screaming
as they fall off the raft and try to haul each other back on to the raft they
have made!! Armed with torches and
cagoules we went on a night hike over the Mendips on the wettest night in July,
the guides didn’t worry about the rain and we had a super time.
We went to our county campsite at Somermead for a cookout and camp skills
in preparation for the county camp in the summer holidays.
Twenty one of our guides attended the county camp at Sexey’s School
along with 500 other guides. The
girls took part in many activities including kayaking, climbing wall, wet games,
zip wire, etc. Many new friendships
were forged and everyone had a great time. Our
last term of 2006 was once again very active. One night in September we set off
complete with Trangia stoves and food for a sunset hike and cook out on the top
of the knoll. Sunset was at 6.29pm
and we were at the top in time to see the sunset drop down behind a cloud. Each patrol then found a sheltered spot and started to cook
their food. Whenever the BKG’s
cook, there is always a course with chocolate, this time there were marshmallows
and fresh fruit dipped in melted chocolate.
Girlguiding UK held a X Factor style singing competition and Rhiane and
Becky and Georgina got through to the Division finals.
We attended the Big Gig at Wembley and each guide customized a top to
wear. Each patrol worked on Go For
Its over a 3 week period – this was a very busy time; smoothies were created
for Healthy Living, a pyjama party and a chocolate fountain party were held for
Parties, one patrol chose to do Glamamora and a very sticky face mask was made
with honey, oats and other ingredients. We always attend the Remembrance Sunday Service at St
Michaels and we invited three members of the British Legion to come and talk to
the guides about the work of the British Legion.
Following this we held a coffee evening with each patrol having a stall
to raise money for the British Legion. Our last meeting of the year was on the
top of the knoll on a Sunday morning to see the sun rise.
We all met at the Parish Hall at 7am, and quietly walked through the
village and up to the top of the knoll. From
the top of the knoll we looked out at misty, purple coloured scene of
Glastonbury Tor and the Somerset levels. The
sun started to peep through and as it slowly emerged next to Glastonbury Tor the
colours of the sky changed to warm oranges and reds.
It was a magnificent sight. What a wonderful end to our year. 2007
started with a disco with Highbridge Guides, a Ready Steady Cook night and a
visit to the BOS Panto ‘Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs’.
Over the year we worked on several badges of the Right Now. We had a residential weekend in April with the theme of
‘Get Constructive’. The girls
took part in many activities including brick laying, painting, carpentry and
property design. This was a great
weekend with opportunities for the girls to really try something different.
The summer term started with a night based on the election, with
activities on votes for women, preparing a campaign and mini election.
We had a Ready Steady ‘oudoor’ Cook night, a mum’s v guides night
where the guides challenged their mum’s to a night of guide activities.
We went kayaking on the River Axe, had an evening of water games,
attended the Connie Robb picnic and had a stall at the village fete.
Jane, Tania, Hannah, Sarah, Gina and several of the guides had a super
time in Switzerland in August. The
trip was a wonderful opportunity for the guides to go abroad with their friends,
make new friends and start to become independent. We
have a full unit with a waiting list. Ten
of the girls are currently working on the Baden Powell Challenge (the highest
award a guide can achieve). Tania
and I are very proud that since the last AGM 13 of our guides have completed the
BP challenge and 12 of the young leaders currently in the district are our
ex-guides. Sadly
we said goodbye to Hayley at the end of the Summer Term. Kate, who had been a parent helper for a while, bravely
stepped in and volunteered to become a warranted guider.
Thank you Kate. Tania,
Kate and I have had some great times over the past year with our guides and we
hope they too will have many happy memories.
Our team of young leaders are a great asset to our unit, they are always
cheerful, positive and excellent role models to the guides.
Thank you Han, Sarah, Charlotte and Gina for your dedication and
commitment. Also thank you to our
husbands, Paul, Gary and Steve who give us unfailing ‘behind the scenes’
support without which we would not be able to give so much of our time to
Guiding. Jane,
Tania, Kate, Hannah, Sarah, Charlotte and Gina |
