NOTES FROM THE MEETINGS HELD ON 12 JANUARY, 23 JANUARY, and 9 FEBRUARY 2004 DOGGY DOINGS The Parish Council were delighted to note the appreciative and amusing letter in the January "Brent Knoll News" from Meg and Dylan Greyhound (written with a little help from their mum, Jackie Cooper), in which they explained how the new dog bin had made life so much easier and, well...more convenient for them. They particularly mentioned that this new bin meant that it was no longer necessary to find a convenient stop near the School, where there is also of course another dog bin. The Council would also like to congratulate and thank the many dog owners who, by using the bins, have made a significant contribution to making Brent Knoll a pleasant, safer, and healthier place to walk. Unfortunately, these congratulations cannot extend to the one or two inconsiderate owners who are still frequently allowing their dogs to foul the area near the School. But no one in Brent Knoll would be so antisocial as to deliberately hazard the health of our schoolchildren, when there is a dog bin specially placed nearby for them to use, would they? VILLAGE GREEN The area in front of the goalpost and basketball net has become very muddy. The Council has agreed to apply grass seed to the area and to remove the goalpost and the net for the time being in order to give the seed a better chance to take. HIGHWAYS The Council was pleased to note that the pressure it has maintained over the last few years has at last borne fruit with the publication of the proposals for the introduction of a speed limit along Burton Row. The Council has responded to the highway authority to express its firm support for the proposals and has also applied pressure to ensure that the new speed limit is implemented as quickly as possible once the necessary legal processes have been completed. COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH The Council also decided to acquire a speed measurement gun for the use of the Community Speedwatch Group. It had originally been the intention for the group to operate using one of the speed guns held by Sedgemoor District Council for loan, but it became clear that these were in great demand and could well not be available when required in Brent Knoll. Although the Community Speedwatch Group is independent of the Council (albeit encouraged by them) it has no funds of its own and the Council felt that the Group could not be expected to operate effectively without access to its own speed gun. The gun has been funded from the monies held in the Council’s reserve fund which is specifically allocated for Traffic Calming measures. JUBILEE TREE The Council was pleased to accept an offer from the Golden Jubilee Committee to plant a tree on the Cedar Close triangle. The tree is now in position. SECURITY The Council was concerned to learn that a resident in Burton Row had recently suffered a break-in to an outbuilding. The only item stolen was a quad-bike which was apparently deliberately targeted. All residents are warned to be extra vigilant. ANNUAL PARISH MEETING This year’s Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Monday 26 April at 7.30 pm in the Parish Hall. There will be the usual reports of Parish, District, and County Council activities over the past year and it is then hoped to conclude the evening with presentations on the Village Website (which will give those without access to their own computer a chance to see the site) and on the Community Speedwatch Scheme.
