NOTES FROM THE COUNCIL MEETINGS HELD ON 24 APRIL AND 2 MAY 2006

THE NEW COUNCIL YEAR

The Meeting held on 2 May was the Annual Meeting of the Council at which the various office holders are elected for the coming year.  Cllr Jean Owen and Cllr Derek Wootton were unanimously re-elected as Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively.  Cllrs Malcolm Borland, Roland Humphrey, Brian Rich, and Sybil Rich were elected to serve as members of the Footpath Panel.  Cllrs Brian Freestone and Julie Baker were elected to look after Planning Liaison (and inquiries from residents should continue to be direct to Cllr Freestone).  Cllrs Brian Freestone, Helen House, and the Clerk were elected to serve for the next year as Brent Knoll Charities Trustees, and Cllr Filmer was elected to serve as the Council’s representative on the Parish Hall Committee.

HIGHWAYS AND TRAFFIC SPEEDS

The Council noted that the dog waste bin located outside the School had not yet been replaced: it is understood that Sedgemoor District Council need to resolve a problem Health and Safety issue before doing so.

The results of the visit to Brent Street by the “Speedvisor” speed measuring equipment were considered.  It was noted that, with some exceptions, observance of the Brent Street speed limit was reasonably satisfactory.  The same cannot however be said for Burton Row and (as some people may well have realised to their cost by the time these notes are published) we can now expect occasional but repeated backup visits to the village by a police speed enforcement officer.

PUBLIC TOILETS

The Council understands that the Sedgemoor District Council committee considering the future of the public toilets has recommended to the SDC Executive that closure should be postponed until 31 March 2007 to allow enough time for a thorough consideration of all future options.  The Executive has however yet to make a decision on that recommendation.

GRANTS

As is usual at this time of year, the Council considered a number of applications for grants and decided to award assistance to St Michaels Church (in respect of both churchyard maintenance and the toilet/boiler house project), and Brent Knoll Parish Hall (in respect of the rebuilding project).  An application from Brent Knoll Scouts was deferred pending the receipt of further information.  Small awards were also made to Age Concern Somerset, the WRVS, the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, and the Sedgemoor Citizens Advice Bureau.
