NOTES FROM THE COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 17 JULY 2006

FOOTPATHS AND THE VILLAGE GREEN

The results of the annual safety inspection of the Village Green play equipment, carried out by RoSPA, were noted and it was agreed to carry out the various minor works identified as desirable in the report.

HIGHWAYS

The Council noted a favourable response from Somerset Highways to its request, on behalf of a resident,  for further dropped kerbs in Brent Knoll to make life easier for wheelchairs.

PUBLIC TOILETS

It was noted that, as an alternative to closure, Sedgemoor District Council had offered to transfer the toilets back to the Parish Council at a price which reflected and acknowledged the advantageous terms on which the Parish had originally sold the land to Sedgemoor.  A final decision on this matter will be taken at the September meeting.

TRAFFIC SPEEDS

The Council resolved to request Somerset Highways to consider the provision of two permanent Driver Feedback signs in the village, in order to support the efforts of the Speedwatch group, and to offer a contribution from the Council’s Traffic Calming reserve towards the cost of such signs.  (Driver Feedback signs are similar to the “Speedvisor” signs which have been temporarily installed in the past, and indicate the speed of approaching traffic to vehicle drivers.  Research indicates that where such signs are installed they help achieve a useful and permanent reduction in traffic speeds).

PLANNING (including items from the 19 June Meeting)

Land south of Gifford House, Burton Row: erection of stables: to be opposed on account of the location of the

access and its unsuitability for use by horse-carrying traffic [note: this application has since been withdrawn]

Land north west of St Michaels House, Church Lane: erection of dwellings (approval to reserved matters): supported as in keeping with the surroundings and neighbouring properties

Croftways, 118 Brent Street: reduce four branches of oak tree by 10-15%:  no objections provided in accordance

with good arboricultural practice.

opposed as too large for the site and overshadowing neighbouring properties.

Inner Farm, Burnham, Wind Energy Development (repositioning of 3 turbines): the Council’s previously notified

objections to be maintained, together with objection to the increased “shadow flicker” effects on dwellings in Brent

Street.  It was also agreed that the Clerk should make a statement, on behalf of the Council, to the SDC

Development Control Committee meeting called to consider this application.

8 East Ride, erection of single storey side and rear extensions [amended application]: the reasons for opposition

to the original proposal still applied to the amended plans.

Ferndale House, Wick Lane, erection of building to form garage and first floor office: no objection provided the facilities were for private use only.

The Old Farm, Burton Row: erection of 2.4m high stone wall between house and garage: to be supported as improving the appearance of the plot.

Next Meeting: Monday 4 September in the School

Public Session 7.30pm, meetings commence as soon after 7.30pm as Public Session concludes
