NOTES FROM THE MEETING HELD ON 15 DECEMBER 2003

VANDALISM TO CARS

The Council was concerned to learn that there had been several deliberate instances of damage to cars parked in the village while their owners were attending evening sessions at the Tennis Club, or similar activities. All residents are asked to be vigilant and to keep a look out for anti-social behaviour during the long dark evenings.

HIGHWAYS

The Council agreed to approach Somerset County Council’s local highways office to ask for a dropped kerb to be installed by the northern access to the BWOC garage, to make it easier for the disabled (and for anyone pushing children in a buggy) to gain access to Sanders Garden Centre. The Council was also pleased to learn that, following representations it had made, there has been further police activity to enforce the "no entry" signs now installed opposite the BWOC garage.

WINTER DRIVING

The Council received a copy of the SCC leaflet giving information on the precautionary salting of major routes which is carried out when icy conditions are expected. Most roads, including Brent Street and Burton Row, are not included in salting network and the County has asked us to remind all residents that they are have a responsibility for their own safety in such conditions (and indeed at all times).

COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH

Cllr Jackson was able to report further progress in setting up this initiative, which at the time the Council meeting was held was waiting on a consultation meeting with the police to agree the sites to be operated.

SOMERSET COMMUNITY CHEST

Somerset County Council have also asked the Parish Council to assist in publicising this initiative.

The Community Chest is a small grant scheme to assist community groups or clubs. It can award 50% of project costs up to a maximum of £750. It is looking to support groups most at need in local communities, particularly those with clearly identified needs, and projects which increase opportunities for all.

Community Group representatives interested in pursuing the possibility of grant assistance from the Somerset Community Chest are advised to telephone the Area Fieldworker, Cathy Pegler, for an initial informal chat on 01458 833901.
