NOTES
FROM THE COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 14 JANUARY VILLAGE
GREEN The
Council agreed to a request from the Parish Hall Committee for permission to use
the Green for the traditional annual Village Fete and Jazz events, to be held in
June and July respectively.
As mentioned last month, the decision on the availability of funding for
the project to provide new play equipment on the Green was not due to
be taken until after this issue of the “BKN” closed for press.
VILLAGE
MAINTENANCE The
Council reviewed the tenders received for the Village Maintenance contract and
decided on the award of contract.
HIGHWAYS The
Council will be contacting Somerset Highways over the subsidence occurring in
the carriageways near the railway bridge, and will also ask them to complete the
work on the white line at the A38 end of Brent Street, which has so far only
been intermittently repainted. PRECEPT
2008/9 The
Council decided to set a precept of £29,000 for the forthcoming financial year.
While at first sight this appears to be much higher than last year’s,
it must be remembered that the impact on individual bills remains minimal.
The Council considered the increase to be worthwhile and justified so
that it could to set aside reserves towards a project of great potential benefit
to the Village. Failure
to so act would mean that the opportunity to carry out the project would be
lost. Unfortunately
no further details can be made public until ongoing negotiations are completed
but full details will be announced as soon as possible, hopefully perhaps at the
Annual Parish meeting in April. In the event that the project proves impossible
to realise the reserves will be reallocated to reduce the precept in future
years. PLANNING
Ferndale
House, Wick Lane: variation of previous permission in order to plant hedging in
other areas of the site: to be opposed as the Council’s satisfaction with
the hedging scheme as previously proposed had been a factor in the decision not
to oppose the original application. Westbrook
Farm, Harp Road: demolition of dwelling and erection of a replacement dwelling: to
be supported as
an improvement on the present structure. The
Council also decided to ask SDC to investigate an apparent breach of
advertisement control in the Village. Next
Meeting: Monday 4 February in the School
Public
Session 7.30pm, meeting commences as soon after 7.30pm as Public Session
concludes Michael

PRESS The
Council learned of the Planning Inspector’s decision to dismiss the appeal
against the refusal of consent for the Wind Farm as these notes were being
finalised. The
Council welcomes this decision which it regards as a vindication of all the hard
work put in by the kNOll group and by the Burnham and Highbridge Town Council
and the Parish Council. |
