NOTES FROM THE MEETING HELD ON 10 MAY 2004

INTERNAL ELECTIONS
The meeting held on 10 May was the Parish Council's Annual Meeting which has, by law, to start with the election of the Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the coming year. The existing incumbents, namely Cllr Bob Filmer (Chairman) and Cllr Jean Owen (Vice-Chairman) were unanimously re-elected to serve for another 12 months. Cllrs Rich, Osborn and Baker were elected to serve on the Footpaths Panel and Cllrs House Freestone, and Lamb as Brent Knoll Charities Trustees. The Council also noted the resignation of Mr Maurice Jackson and acknowledged his contribution over the five years of his membership, three of which were spent as Chairman.

VILLAGE GREEN
There have been instances of damage being caused to the surface of the Village Green by vehicles using it as either an overflow car park or (it would seem) an impromptu racetrack. The new gate across the entrance mentioned in last month's notes should have been installed by the time this report is published.

It was also noted that the Jubilee Commemoration Stone by the car park entrance had been struck by a vehicle and moved out of position. The Stone has now been relocated in its correct position once more.

HIGHWAYS
The Council noted that the road verge had collapsed in Middle Street and also that the fencing was in poor condition. These problems will be taken up with the Highway Authority.

COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH
The Council also considered the future of the Community Speedwatch Group, following the resignation of Mr Jackson who had been acting as the Group Leader. The Council now hopes to arrange for the initiative to be taken forward by another volunteer. It should be emphasised that although the Group has the full encouragement of the Council it will be a completely separate entity from it.

ANNUAL GRANTS
The Council considered the annual grant applications received from local organisations (and larger charitable-type organisations working in the locality) and decided to make awards to St Michael's PCC towards the costs of churchyard maintenance and also towards the fundraising for the St Michael's toilet/boiler house project. Grants were also made to the Brent Knoll Parish Hall project and to the Brent Knoll Scouts. Small grants were also made to Victim Support Somerset, Winged Fellowship Trust, Sedgemoor Citizens Advice Bureau, and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

PLANNING
Sweet Briar, Middle Street: erection of first floor extension: to be opposed as out of scale with the existing building, with poor proposed ca r parking provision, and being contrary to Policy BE2 of the Sedgemoor Local Plan.

Next Meeting: Monday 14 June 2004 in the School.
Public Session 7.15pm, meeting commences 7.30pm
