NOTES FROM THE COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 5 JUNE 2006

FOOTPATHS AND THE VILLAGE GREEN

It was agreed to arrange for the repair of a broken stile near the old Brent Corner Post Office and to provide a new sign for the path near East Ride.  A new sign is also to be provided on the Village Green to remind users that dogs are not permitted thereon.  Some usage by dog owners still occurs but modern health and safety concerns mean that dog exercise areas and children’s play equipment areas simply cannot co-exist.

HIGHWAYS

In response to a request from a resident, the Council agreed to request further dropped kerbs in Brent Knoll to make life easier for wheelchairs.  Problems are also being caused to both wheelchair users and ambulant pedestrians as a result of several hedges which have been allowed to grow out over the footways by some residents.  The Council asks everyone to ensure that such hedges are kept trimmed.

PUBLIC TOILETS

At the time of writing, a site meeting had been held with officers of Sedgemoor District Council to discuss the  future of the public toilets, and the various options that might be open, but the SDC Executive had yet to consider the issue.

Members of the Council have also had to spend a considerable amount of time and effort recently obliterating some extremely boring graffiti in the toilets and dealing with the aftermath of misuse of the facilities by some of the sadder young people of the village, who are so short of worthwhile ways to pass the time that they have to resort to water bombing the Parish Hall, or passing buses, or strewing toilet paper around.  Since a number of the perpetrators live not a million miles from the Village Green it seems rather unlikely that their parents can be totally unaware of their “pastime”: the Council therefore appeals, once again, to all parents to take a more responsible attitude and instil some sense into their children.

ANNUAL ACCOUNTS

The Council resolved to adopt the Annual Accounts for the 2005/6 Financial Year and also to approve the Statement of Assurance  (that proper financial practices have been followed) that has to be submitted to the appointed Auditors.

PLANNING (including items from the 15 May Meeting not previously reported)

Land south of Hindaws, Bristol Road: erection of dwelling [outline application : no objections subject to approval being restricted to a single storey dwelling to avoid overlooking neighbouring properties.

OS Field 2600, Crooked Lane: erection of field shelter: no observations

Peatlands, 12 Brent Street: erection of single storey rear extension and side garage, conversion of garage to living accommodation, and first floor extension above: no objections provided a turning space for vehicles maintained within the site so that vehicles do not have to reverse out into Brent Street.

Land south of Gifford House, Burton Row: erection of dwelling, garage, and formation of access [approval to

reserved matters]: no objections to the dwelling as now proposed, but objection to the realignment of the access

drive which should be retained on the originally proposed alignment to minimise impact on neighbours, enhance

road safety, and retain existing trees.

8 East Ride: erection of single storey side and rear extension, partly on site of existing (to be demolished): to be

opposed as over-development of the plot and contrary to Local Plan policy BE(2).

Elm Tree Farm, Burton Row: erection of dwelling on site of existing annex and barn (to be demolished): to be

opposed as too large for the site and overshadowing neighbouring properties.

Woodlands Country House Hotel, Hill Lane: change of use from hotel to dwelling: no observations

Public Session 7.30pm, meetings commence as soon after 7.30pm as Public Session concludes
