NOTES FROM THE COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 4 JUNE 2007

VILLAGE GREEN AND PLAY EQUIPMENT

The Council has had to remove the remains of the steering wheel from the Spring Tractor as it had been broken off (in what looks suspiciously like an act of deliberate vandalism).  It is hoped to be able to arrange the installation of a replacement wheel.  The long-awaited repairs to the safety surfacing around the various pieces of equipment were understood to be imminent and should definitely have been carried out by the time these notes appear.  The annual independent safety inspection carried out by RoSPA was also due to take place in June.

The Council also agreed to a request from the Girl Guides to use the Green for their annual picnic event.

In what looks like another piece of deliberate vandalism, the warning reflector post by the Jubilee Stone has been snapped off, so time, effort – and council taxpayers’ money – will have to be spent on a replacement.

HIGHWAYS AND ROAD SAFETY

The Council received reports of a number of instances of drivers being seen negotiating Brent Street (and in particular the double bend by Church Lane)  whilst at the same time talking on mobile phones, thus displaying a cavalier disregard for the law, their own safety, the safety of pedestrians in the area…and, in one observed instance involving a mother on the school run, the safety of her own children in the back of her 4 x 4.   The Council asks all motorists to remember that using a mobile phone while driving is both dangerous and illegal.

PUBLIC TOILETS

The Council received the bill for the legal costs involved in the acquisition of the toilets.  Thanks to the generosity of a local solicitor living in the village, who kindly made no charge for his time, the total came to only £47.  The Council is extremely grateful for this public-spirited gesture.

PLANNING

Sanders Garden World: extension to polytunnel areas and installation of rainwater storage tank :  no objections provided the proposals do not result in any increase in the foul sewage flow generated by the site.

1 The Willows: remove branches from and crown thin several Ash and Sycamore Trees: no objections provided in accordance with good arboricultural practice

90 Brent Street: reduce canopy and reshape crown of Acacia Tree: no objections provided in accordance with good arboricultural practice

The Council also received a report of a further meeting with the adviser preparing the case for the public inquiry into the Wind Farm appeal, jointly with the Highbridge and Burnham Town Council, and gave consideration to the arrangements to be made for attendance at the inquiry.

Next Meeting: Monday 2 July in the School

Public Session 7.30pm, meeting commences as soon after 7.30pm as Public Session concludes
