NOTES
FROM THE COUNCIL MEETINGS HELD ON 1 OCTOBER VILLAGE
GREEN Following
a review of the condition of the goalpost, the Council has decided that the
crossbar should be removed for safety reasons.
The two uprights will be refurbished and retained for the time being in
order to delineate a goalmouth and avoid the need for budding footballers to
arrange piles of coats on the grass to mark the goal.
It is hoped to provide a replacement goalpost in due course but such
items are rather costly. SPEEDING
AND ROAD SAFETY The
Council was pleased to welcome Police Sgt Lawrence and PCSO Sam Hayden to the
meeting. They have agreed to give
further attention to the problem of drivers who speed through the village: if
you are one of that thoughtless minority, you have been warned! BE
SEEN – BE SAFE The
Council also reminds residents of the importance of wearing light or
(preferably) reflective clothing and carrying a torch when walking through the
village at night. With no street
lighting, it is not easy for drivers to pick out pedestrians wearing dark
coloured clothes, however carefully and slowly they may be driving.
For your own safety – be seen, be safe. FIREWORK
DISPLAYS The
Council will be responding to a request from Sedgemoor District Council for
information about those who regularly hold firework displays.
Sedgemoor’s interest derives from public safety concerns, but the
Parish Council also repeats its regular annual appeal to all residents setting
off fireworks to remember that there are many animals – pets and horses – in
the Brent Knoll area who will be seriously distressed by loud bangs. DOG
FOULING One
item which was inadvertently omitted from the last report concerns the
continuing problem of dog fouling which seems particularly endemic in the area
of the Methodist Church. The
Council appeals, once again, to all residents to act responsibly and to remove
dog waste. LETTERBOX
AT BRENT CORNER The
Council also decided to make a formal complaint to the Post Office about the
lack of prior consultation or forewarning concerning the removal of the
letterbox at Brent Corner. “INTERNAL”
AUDITOR WANTED The
Council is seeking a suitably qualified volunteer to act as Internal Auditor,
following the retirement of the present incumbent.
Despite the job title, the person appointed must not be a member of the
Council. The duties involve
checking and auditing the Council’s annual accounts each year (usually in
April/May) prior to their being submitted to the External Auditor (the
professional accountancy firm nominated by the Government to give the final
certification. A small
honorarium is payable for the work: anyone interested in volunteering is asked
to contact the Council Chairman, Cllr Borland, in the first instance. PLANNING Elm
Tree Farm, Burton Row: erection of
dwelling on site of former barn and annex (to be demolished) and alterations to
access: no
observations. 2
The Willows: crown thin Sycamore by 20%: no
objections provided in accordance with good arboricultural practice. The
Coach House, 124 Brent Street: erection of first floor extension to SE
elevation: no objections in
principle, but concern over the potential for overlooking from the rear dressing room
window, which could be addressed by either a requirement for obscured glass or
redesign of the window. Next
Meeting: Monday 5 November in the School
Public
Session 7.30pm, meeting commences as soon after 7.30pm as Public Session
concludes |
