Owen J Cullwick Main meetings are generally held on the first Monday of the month, but there are exceptions: i.e. to avoid Bridgwater Carnival, in the run up to Christmas, and to avoid Easter Monday. The main meetings are held in the Village School. The Parish Council also organises the Annual Parish Meeting which is held each May in the Parish Hall. The Parish Council deals with a variety of issues including: commenting on planning applications; upkeep of footpaths, stiles and signs; maintenance of the Village Green and of the children's play equipment; monitoring of the condition of local highways; problems of speeding traffic and other road and traffic hazards; and keeping a watching brief on all other issues of concern to the village or to residents. Agendas for each forthcoming meeting are posted on the notice boards by the Village Green, at Brent Corner, and outside the Village Post Office. All meetings are open to the public and provision is made for any member of the public to address the Council on any matter of concern before the formal meeting starts. All members whether elected or co-opted, are bound by the provisions of the Code of Conduct adopted by the Council. This follows the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct promulgated by Central Government. Parish Council elections are held every four years, the most recent being in May 2003. To be eligible for election candidates must either reside in or within 3 miles of Brent Knoll, or occupy land in or work in the Parish. The election procedure is handled by Sedgemoor District Council and notices inviting nominations for candidature are published prior to each election. Vacancies arising between elections are advised by notices published on the Village Notice boards: a by-election must be held if "claimed" by at least 10 electors: but otherwise the vacancy may be filled by co-option. Current issues being discussed are: the Fox and Goose Junction, speeding traffic, village brochure and website, Village Green bylaws, provision of dog waste and litter bins and Wick Lane footpath crossing.
We are making a village design statement to keep our village as wonderful as it is now. |
