Brent Knoll Parish Hall Project 2000+
Brent Knoll Parish Hall - Officially Re-opens!

Mrs Jo Wright (Parish Hall Chairperson), Cllr Ann Bown (Chairman

Sedgemoor District Council), Cllr Robin Bush (Chairman,

Somerset County Council), Bob Filmer (Parish Hall Vice-Chairman)

and John Page (Parish Hall Treasurer)

The weather outside may have been wet and miserable, but the reception that awaited over 100 local residents in the newly extended and refurbished hall could not have been warmer.  At 2.30pm on Saturday 23rd October, Brent Knoll Parish Hall welcomed their honoured guests Robin Bush (of Channel 4’s Time Team and Chairman of Somerset County Council), Ann Bown (Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council) and David Hancock (Charity Bank).

Everyone was greeted with a free glass of wine and, after dodging the showers for some quick photos outside, the opening party moved back into the Hall.  Jo Wright, Parish Hall Chairperson, welcomed everyone and handed over to Master of Ceremonies John Page who introduced the guests. Robin Bush cut the ribbon and the Hall was officially reopened.  Robin and Ann congratulated those assembled and the whole village for their efforts in producing such a splendid hall, which so successfully blended the original hall with the modern extension and facilities.  They both agreed that a Village Hall forms the heart of the community and Brent Knoll’s heart was

obviously strong.

John Page thanked the guests, and all those who had helped, including, the architects, Stride Treglown, the builders, Smith & Co., the County and District Councils, who between them had given £ 70,000, the Charity Bank, who had provided a loan to the hall to complete the works, the Community Council, the Wyvern and Nuttall Trusts who had donated funds, many local people who had given donations, including the Bobbie John Fund (which was still collecting money in order to name a room after Bobbie), the Parish

Council and everyone else who had raised money on behalf of the hall.  He also thanked Sanders Garden World for providing the lovely plants around the hall.  He said there were too many people to name everyone individually, but thanked all those who attended the monthly bazaars, the village fete, the Red Cow quiz nights and various other fund raising events, as well as those who bought tickets in the 200+ Club.  All had contributed to the success of Project 2000+ which would benefit the whole village for years

to come.

After thanking all those who had turned out inspite of the awful weather John Page invited them to join in the wonderfully prepared and set out buffet provided by Parish Hall Committee members and asked Jo Wright to cut the celebration cake.

“It was such a lovely event”, Jo Wright said afterwards “and to have so many local people come out to the opening, on such a wet and miserable day, made you realise it had all been worthwhile.  Now all the hard work is complete, I would like to express my grateful thanks to all the committee members who have worked so hard over the last few years to achieve the wonderful results we see before us today”.

Volunteers have helped to finish the inside of the parish hall.

You may have seen that work has started on Brent Knoll Parish Hall. The builders (Smith & Co. of Burton Row, Brent Knoll) moved on site on Monday 5th April 2004. It has been a long journey to get us to this point. Our first fundraising event was a Music Night (The Axe Valley Jazzmen & Bulldog) and Pig Roast on the Green on 20th September 1997 !!. Earlier that day we had held an Open Day for the village to see our first plans for the hall. In response to local residents, users of the hall, the planning department and financial realities (unfortunately the Lottery turned down our application), the plans have been through many many amendments, to finally leave us with the ones we have before us now. Ground Floor Plan. Proposed Elevations.

It has been our intention to "Renovate, Refurbish and Redecorate" and not to Replace the Parish Hall, that has served the village so well for over 75 years. The original hall is remaining, with the various "add-ons", that allowed the hall to grow as Brent Knoll did, making way for more modern and user friendly extensions.

The new additions to the Hall will be constructed in brick to match the original hall. The grey rendered flat roofed toilet block to the front of the hall will be removed, as will the existing kitchen and committee room. All the flat roofs will be replaced with pitched ones. The symmetry of the original building will be restored by extensions to both sides of the Hall.

The toilet block and store rooms are to be located to the right hand side of the hall (as you look from Brent Street). These will act as a noise buffer and help the Hall to be a better neighbour to residents living nearby. Also a toilet, only accessible from the main hall, will be available to help increase security, particularly for Youth Group users.

The Kitchen moves to the rear back corner, with a Lounge/Meeting Room running to the front of the building. This allows 2 users to use the hall at the same time, both with independent access to kitchen and toilets (without intruding on each other).

You will see over the coming weeks, firstly the old extensions disappear and then the new rise from the dust. The main hall will remain open until the end of June when it will then close to allow the roof to be re-tiled and the asbestos ceilings to be removed. We will try and keep you updated as to progress through the Brent Knoll News and the Village Website.

In order to get the work on the new Hall started, the committee have taken out a substantial loan with a specialist lender. So although the building work has started, the fundraising goes on.

We have got a busy summer of events lined up.

In April we held a Race Night (the last event before building started) and will be holding the Monthly Bazaar.

In May we will be holding the Monthly Bazaar.

In June we will be holding the Village Fete

In July we will be holding the Monthly Bazaar

In August we will be holding the Monthly Bazaar AND Jazz on the Green with Martin Bennett

In September we will be holding the Monthly Bazaar AND welcoming back Fougere Rouge

More details of all these events will be published both in the Brent Knoll News and the on the Village Website.

We think that the modernised hall will be able to meet the needs of the residents of Brent Knoll both now and into the future and hope that it will be able to do as good a job for our community as the original hall has done for the last 75 years.

This is the Hall before renovation started.
